Do Ultrasonic Pest Control Product Really Works?

According to Jack DeAngelis, PhD, "Various devices on the market claim to repel bugs and rodents with ultrasonic or electromagnetic energy. These devices have repeatedly failed to do what they claim to do in scientific trials". Now this is a very interesting part. The question is why those ultrasonic pest control manufacturing companies are confidently still coming up with more volume in their production of ultrasonic pest control devices.

I am sure the cost to research and producing those product involved huge amount of money. If they the manufacturer know that their product does not really work is not it risky to invest in such a huge amount of money to produce a product that they know does not work well and cannot sell?

There is of course some ultrasonic pest control devices are not so effective or not really works. However there is also some product really works as it claimed. My opinion is, it is up to the costumer to decide whether to buy the product or not and it also a costumers responsibility to check and get the information before they decide to buy it

That is also the reason why I setup this blog to help us as costumers to exchange ideas and experience about ultrasonic pest control product so that when we buy the devices it will be a well-informed purchase. So you are invited to share your knowladge and experience about ultrasonic pest control in the comment section. Hopefuly those comments about the products can be of use to many people out there.

Another Product From Bell and Howell.

I stumbled upon another ultrasonic pest control product from Bell and Howell yesterday. It seems Bell and Howell has a lot of ultrasonic pest control products in store for us user to give it a try. They claimed that their ultrasonic and electromagnetic pest repeller will helps to get rid your home of pesky critters without messy traps or poisonous chemicals. On paper it sounds good. This ultrasonic pest control innovative technology uses wiring within your house's wall to emits a sounds or signal that drive insects and rodents away from your house. To use it is just very simple. Plug-in unit protects one floor level and features a side outlet so you won't lose plugspace.

Afters searching around in the internet I've found several costumers reviews about the products In my previous post regarding to the similar product from Bell and Howell, it was noted that the product was not as good as it should be. So let see what the costumers said about this another ultrasonic pest control from Bell and Howell.

By N. Gardner (San Diego, CA USA)

The product may or may not work. I do not know the answer because the side effects were too unpleasant to leave it plugged in for long. The frequency range it claims to operate under is well beyond what humans can hear, but the unit additionally makes a piercing high pitched whining worthy of making ones ears (and eyes!) hurt. It was certainly well within my range of hearing. I could hear the sound throughout my house, regardless of how far from the unit I walked.

Also having researched many models and brands of this product before purchasing, I felt comfortable in its reassurance that domestic animals would not be affected by this product. (Most similar products make this claim.) For this unit however, the promise turned out to be outrageously false. From the second the product was plugged in, my cat responded as if being attacked by auditory ghosts: crouching low to the ground, defensively spinning, darting about the house, dodging in random directions and doubling back on himself... seemingly unable to escape.

Within 20 minutes of receiving the product, I had already packed it back in its box and was standing in line at the post office to send it right back.

This product may deter pests, but it will also drive off family, friends, pets, and quite possibly your sanity.

I'd recommend looking into similar products with a higher price tag.

I bought this product after I found a mouse in my apartment. You see I am extremely allergic to mice and can't deal with even one or two creeping about. That said I still don't want to torture, or poison the little things. I feel a bit like a bartender after hours, (i.e. "they don't have to go home but they can't stay here.") So I read some online information and bought this product. I wasn't sure about it at first because I does make an audible wining/clicking sound (easy enough I just put it in the bathroom so that I only hear it when I'm in there). But because it works through the wiring of you apartment/home it works just the same no matter were you put it. With in an hour I started seeing little black house spiders making a mass exodus from my bathroom. So I thought great it really works. Now it's four days later and I have not seen hide nor hair (or in this case mouse turds) of the little furry critters either. After talking to my neighbor who are still having mouse problems I can only surmise that it is this lovely product which drove the little guys from my apartment. I told them to go buy this product that way they don't have to hurt the mice, just drive them away.

Ultrasonic Pest Control From Bell and Howell. Some Costumer Reviews.

Bell and Howell has come out with a new ultrasonic pest control product or they call it as ultrasonic pest repellers. I believe this ultrasonic pest control or repellers product is good to help protect your home from vile, disease-carrying rodents and insects.

According to them, it is just very easy to use. Just plug them into any wall power socket and the ultrasonic technology emits a constantly-changing signal that drives pests crazy. The sounds that produced by this devices are virtually inaudible to you and your pets. This ultrasonic pest control or repellers product comes with extra outlet 3 pack set.

So what are the reviews?

By Gary Peterson (San Diego, California USA)

We have a certain number of annoying pests around the house. Fortunately, there are no rodents. We have a couple cats and the rodents seem to know better than to show up. I wish I could say the same for silverfish, spiders, earwigs, ants, scorpions and moths. Argentine ants are especially annoying and I have a poison which is sometimes effective. Sometimes it isn't, however.

I ran across this little item: the Bell and Howell Ultrasonic Pest Repeller (model no. SB 104) and picked up 6. It seemed so simple. Just plug this into your outlets and it will emit an ultrasonic blip now and then and the pests will disappear. Plus it's Bell and Howell, isn't it? They turn out good, effective, well-researched products, don't they? I couldn't resist. I took my treasures home and plugged them in: two in the kitchen, two in the dining room, one in the living room and one in the bathroom.

Well, intuitively, I just knew this wasn't going to work but I had a glimmer of hope. Pests around the house are usually just not that simple of a problem. But, it seemed worth a try. Well, sure enough, they don't work. They sit there plugged in and emitting a little flashing light about every three seconds, and presumably an inaudible ultrasonic signal that insects, etc, just can't bear. Well, I haven't noticed that it has any effect at all on the insect population. The ants still seem to be everywhere, including right on the ultrasonic repeller.

I'm going to give these things a longer try, simply because I bought them. However, the product appears to be totally ineffective, as far as I can tell. If you're looking for the magic wand solution to your household pest problems, these Ultrasonic Pest Repellers are probably not it.

Do not waste your money. I put 1 in my kitchen. It had been plugged-in for a few weeks. I was baking cupcakes, took them out of the oven, placed them on a rack to cool. When I came back into the kitchen to frost the cupcakes, a mouse was eating my cupcakes 2 feet away from this hunk of crap.

By K. J. Harlow "SodaYak

This is a poor-quality copy of other, better products. This one does not emit a constant ultrasonic tone, instead it "blips" every 5 seconds or so, which I do not think is enough to drive pests away. I have used the Sunbeam Ultrasonic Pest repeller (which unfortunately the company doesn't make any more) and that worked wonders keeping spiders and other bugs out of my house, because it had a constant, changing-frequency sound emitted by the device. Don't waste your money on this one. I bought it to keep fleas away after flea-bombing my apartment and they are still around.

Based on the three costumers review above none of them has said something positive about this ultrasonic pest control from Bell and Howell. So it is up to you know whether you are still going to buy it or not. I have come to a conclusion that buying it will be a waste of your hard earned money. There are many other more useful and effective ultrasonic pest control in the market that you can buy.

Considering Ultrasonic Pest Control Devices? Save Your Money

by Barb Ogg, PhD, Extension Educator
This article appeared in the NEBLINE Newsletter

A number of gadgets are being marketed to unsuspecting folks who want an easier and safer way to manage pests around the home. These ultrasonic devices are marketed through mail order companies, home shopping cable channels, in gardening magazines and are readily being sold on the internet. The extension office has received a number of phone calls from folks who are interested in buying these as gifts or for themselves and want to know how effective they are.

Ultrasonic devices claim to use ultra-high frequency sound waves to chase away birds, bats, rodents and arthropod pests like fleas, cockroaches, silverfish and even spiders. Most of them are designed to plug into an electrical outlet, but there are battery-operated models that have been designed as a flea-repellent collar and pocket-sized cards for outdoor lovers to carry around with them to repel mosquitoes. They range from cheap ($6.99) to very expensive ($699.00).

The consensus of researchers who have actually investigated ultrasonic devices is these products do not effectively repel or eliminate pests from homes. In fact, in the 1980's the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged several companies with false advertising and required them to make refunds to customers. My guess is it is just a matter of time and the FTC will go after the makers of these other devices also.

The advice, "If it seems to good to be true, it probably isn't true" fits here. There are plenty of non-toxic or low toxic methods to keep pests outside, but they take a bit more time and effort than plugging an ineffective device into an electrical outlet. These include:

Mouse Control:

* Seal crackes and crevices larger than 1/4 inch.
* Eliminate weedy growth or vegetation near the house. Mice live in these locations.
* Use traps and/or glueboards inside the house at the earliest signs of mice.

Invading Insects (box elder bugs, lady bugs, crickets, some spiders):

* Again, seal small cracks and crevices.
* Place glueboards in the corners of rooms to catch critters that inadvertently wander inside.

Glueboards are one of the easiest trapping methods for invading insects and they are cheap, too. The cheapest are often sold for rodent control, but they readily catch insects that crawl on the floor. There are two types of glueboards. The first is the "tray" type that has a shallow depression filled with a very sticky substance. The second type is a "board" trap--basically a thin piece of cardboard with a sticky layer on it. The board traps are more effective for both rodents and insects--and they are often cheaper than the tray types.

In addition to being inexpensive, sticky traps are completely non-toxic. The biggest problem is when pets or kids get into it. The sticky substance can be removed with vegetable oil, but it will be messy.

Ultrasonic Pest Control

Pests have become a menace in every area of human occupation and are a constant cause of damage to property and equipment. Pests such as rats can nibble away anything from soft materials such as paper and cloth to hard substances such as wood and plastic. It is also estimated that rats waste around fifteen to twenty percent of the world's food grain supply. Uncontrolled growth of pests can also lead to the occurrence of various diseases such as plague.

Ultrasonic pest control devices are used to prevent pests such as rats from entering homes, barns, storage houses, and fields. These devices produce ultrasonic sound waves that cause discomfort to rats and forces them to stay away from areas covered by the sound waves. These devices work silently and do not cause any damage to the surrounding environment as compared to other methods of pest control such as pesticides.

A number of ultrasonic pest control devices available in the market claim to produce high-pitched sounds, heard only by pests that are so annoying that pests either leave or die due to the ultrasonic sound waves. These devices do not affect humans and are considered safe for common pets such as gerbils and hamsters.

In spite of the claims made by ultrasonic pest control device manufacturers, their effectiveness in dealing with pests still raises a lot of questions. Scientific studies conducted on some of these devices has indicated that pests share the same hearing range as humans and if humans are not affected, they may as well cause no discomfort to pests.

Customers looking for ultrasonic pest control solutions need to check the efficacy of these devices before actually buying them. They can select a particular brand of ultrasonic pest control device that offers filed testing of its devices and money back guarantees in case the customer is not satisfied with its performance.
